Ask your notes (AI) and MCP

Ask questions across all your notes, or let Claude and other AI tools use them over MCP.

Ask your notes

Open Ask your notes in the left navigation and ask as in a chat:

  • "What did I write down last week?"
  • "Which books about writing did I read last month?"
  • "Which tasks are still open?"

The AI first retrieves relevant notes, answers from them, and lists the notes it cited underneath so you can check. Keep a good answer with Save as note.

Why don't I see AI?

AI is enabled and configured by the server's administrator:

  • ivyNote Cloud: availability is described in the service.
  • Self-hosted (coming soon): the admin configures a model service (OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic) in Admin → AI and enables AI for accounts.

"AI is not enabled" means your account cannot use it yet; ask your administrator.

Retrieval

  • With an embedding model configured, retrieval is semantic (click Update index to build it).
  • Otherwise it uses keyword search.

MCP: your notes in other AI tools

ivyNote includes an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, so Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients can search, read and write your notes.

  1. Create a token in Settings → API tokens & MCP (ivy_pat_…).
  2. Add the server to your AI tool:
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "ivynote": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://web.ivynote.app/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ivy_pat_…" }
    }
  }
}

Use your server's address in url (https://web.ivynote.net/mcp for the mainland China region).

Tools: search_notes, get_note, list_notes, list_folders, list_tags, related_notes, create_note, append_to_note, update_note.

A token carries your account's permissions. Keep it safe and delete it when no longer needed.
