Import and export
Import from Markdown files, folders or Joplin, and export everything as a zip.
Import
Open Settings → Import and pick a source:
| Source | Notes |
|---|---|
| Markdown files or a zip | Pick .md files, or a zip exported by ivyNote |
| Markdown folder | Sub-folders become notebooks; images and attachments come along |
| Joplin export | In Joplin choose "Export all → MD", then pick that folder |
How it works:
- Files are read and parsed on your device first, and you see an overview (notes, notebooks, attachments, tags, links). Nothing is uploaded until you confirm.
- Choose the target notebook and click Start import.
- Attachments upload first, then notes in batches, with live progress.
Details:
- Importing never changes existing notes. Importing the same files again skips what is already there.
- An interrupted import continues where it stopped when you run it again. Keep the tab open meanwhile.
- Relative links between notes become ivyNote note links.
- Notes keep their original dates; notes without dates use the file's modification time.
- Picking single files cannot read the images they reference; pick the whole folder to include them.
Export
In Settings, choose Export all notes (Markdown + attachments zip):
- One folder per notebook
- Attachments in
_attachments/ - Links between notes kept as relative paths
Any Markdown editor can open the result, and ivyNote can import it again (for example to move a local library to a synced one).
